Description
Dorsal spines (total): 6-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11; Analspines: 1; Analsoft rays: 9-10; Pectoral fin rays: 17; Longitudinal scale series: about 120; Greatest depth of body: 5.9-7.0 in SL; Body elongate, compressed. Head slightly compressed; Jaws subequal, not reaching to a vertical through posterior margin of eye; Gill opening reaching anteriorly around a vertical through posterior margin of preopercle. Pelvic fins united medially; Frenum present. Scales minute, cycloid; Head, breast and pectoralfin base naked. Sensory canals and pores present on head; Distinct transverse sensory-papillae rows on cheek; A pair of short longitudinal sensory papillae rows just behind chin. Rounded caudal fin, slightly longer than head. Max length: 10.0 cm SL. Depth range: 0 - 10 m.
Color
Mottled dark brown body speckled with pale spots, with a white patch on top of the head, a series of white saddles across the back, a white snout, lips and chin, and dark diagonal bands on the anal fin.
Etymology
Cryptocentrus: from Greek, kryptos = hidden + from Greek, kentron = sting. Referring to a concealed point or projection on preopercle.
maudae: in honor of Maude de Schauensee, daughter of Academy ornithologist Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee and his wife Williamina, to whom the Academy of Natural Sciences (Philadelphia) is “again grateful” for the “elaborate gift” of fishes from Thailand, including type of this one.

Distribution
Indo-West Pacific: Sri Lanka to Northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland (Australia) and New Caledonia, north to Palau, Philippines and Brunei.
Biology
Inhabits tide pools, mud flats, and sheltered sand/rubble patches on inshore and coastal reefs to fresh waters. Shares burrows with alpheid shrimps.
