Description
Dorsal spines (total): 6-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Analspines: 1; Analsoft rays: 9-10; Pectoral fin rays: 16-17; Longitudinal scale series: 90; Greatest body depth: 5.2-6.6 in SL; Caudal fin rounded, longer than head; Pelvic fins united, frenum present; Head naked. Max. length: 11.0 cm TL. Depth range: 2 - 25 m.
Color
Dark brown body with a white back, lips, snout and head, and a series of dark saddles crossing the back.
Etymology
Cryptocentrus: from Greek, kryptos = hidden + from Greek, kentron = sting. Referring to a concealed point or projection on preopercle.
leucostictus: from Greek, leukos = white + from Greek, stiktos = spotted. Referring to small, round, whitish spots and dots covering lower parts of body.
Original description: Gobius leucostictus Günther, 1872 - Type locality: Tonga Islands.
Distribution
Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Andaman Sea and Indonesia east to Palau, Tonga and Samoa, north to Yaeyama Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia.
Biology
Found on open sand bottoms of clear seaward reefs. Lives in a burrow with symbiotic alpheid shrimps. Aquarium fish.
