Description
Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal soft rays: 8-9 (usually: 9); Pectoral fin rays: 9-10 (usually: 10); Top of the carapace nearly flat, the bottom slightly convex, the four ridges sharp; Caudal fin rounded. Max. length : 12.0 cm SL. Depth range: 1 - 20 m.
Color
Males are bluish-grey to blackish with fine pale blue wavy lines on the back, a broad dark stripe with pale wavy lines along upper side and black-edged white spots on sides.
Females have fine black lines on the back, the sides yellowish-brown to greenish-brown with broad black reticulations. Striped Boxfish have a characteristic bony protuberance above the upper lip.

Ostracion: from Greek, ostrakon = shell.

Original description: Ostracion solorensis Bleeker, 1853 - Type locality: Lawajong, Solor Island, Indonesia.
Distribution
Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Indonesia east to Palau, Fiji and Tonga, north to Philippines, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia.
Biology
Inhabits clear coastal reefs in rich invertebrate habitat on shallow crests or upper zone of slopes. Solitary or in pairs. Relatively uncommon inhabitant of coral rich areas of seaward reefs. Sexually dimorphic. Poisonous skin secretions. Aquarium fish.
