Description
Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 10-11 (généralement : 10) ; Rayons mous anaux : 10-12 (habituellement : 11) ; Rayons nageoires pectorales : 17-19. Poisson au corps allongé, plus ou moins globulaire. Les nageoires dorsale et anale sont petites et symétriques et disposées en arrière du corps. Les nageoires pelviennes sont absentes et la peau est lisse, sans écailles. La petite bouche est située au bout d'un museau court avec deux paires de narines ayant la forme d'un Y. Les arothrons ont quatre grosses dents deux en haut et deux en bas, chaque paire étant fusionnée pour former un bec puissant. Il n'y a pas de ligne latérale. Taille maximum : 33.0 cm TL. Profondeur : 3 - 25 m.
Couleur
Coloration très variable. Le plus souvent, le corps est gris-brun clair, plus foncé sur le dos (mais pas toujours), avec quelques taches noires éparses et de taille variable. Les lèvres et le pourtour des yeux sont sombres, parfois tirant sur l'orangé. Assez souvent, il peut être plus ou moins jaune, gris bleuté ou brun.
Etymologie
Arothron : du préfixe Grec, a- = privatif + du Grec, rhothon = nez, narine. En référence aux deux tentacules nasaux en forme de doigts à la place de pores nasaux.
nigropunctatus : du Latin, nigro = noir + du Latin, punctum = ponctué, tacheté.

Distribution
Pacifique Indo-Ouest : Est de l'Afrique, Afrique du Sud, Socotra, Seychelles, Comores, Madagascar et Mascareignes jusqu'à l'Est, îles de la ligne et archipel des tuamotu, au Nord, du Sud du Japon au Sud, Australie et Nouvelle-Calédonie.
Biologie
Présent dans les récifs coralliens denses (lagons, pentes externes). Il se nourrit généralement de coraux (principalement Acropora), mais également d'algues, de mollusques, d'éponges et de tuniciers. Les Arothrons construisent un nid dans le sable où la femelle vient pondre. Les individus sont principalement solitaires. Les Arothrons, comme la plupart des Tetraodontidae, contiennent une toxine (tétrodotoxine) dans leur peau, leurs viscères et leurs gonades.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11 (usually: 10); Anal soft rays: 10-12 (usually: 11); Pectoral fin rays: 17-19. Head and body covered with small spinules except middle of back, around mouth, and side of caudal peduncle; Nasal organ with two bifid fleshy flaps; Caudal fin slightly rounded. Max. length: 33.0 cm TL. Depth range: 3 - 25 m.
Color
Variable, withe, grey, blue, yellow to dark brown but always with widely scattered black spots of different size and usually with a transverse pale band dorsally on snout separatin dark areas around eyes and mouth.

Arothron: from Greek prefix, a- = without + from Greek, rhothon = noze, nostril. Referring to two finger-like nasal tentacles instead of nasal pores.

Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, South Africa, Socotra, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line Islands and Tuamotu Archipelago, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia.
Biology
Inhabit coastal to outer reef crest and slopes with rich invertebrate growth. Sometimes solitary. Adults often in pairs. Feed on corals (usually Acropora tips), crustaceans, mollusks, sponges, tunicates and algae. Generally common.
