-------------------------
Description
Dorsal spines (total): 13-14; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-13; Anal spines: 2; Analsoft rays: 13; Body depth: 2.7-2.9 in SL; Lateral line scale: 26, in transverse series, counting upward and forward from origin of anal: 11. Mouth oblique; Maxillary extending to a vertical through anterior edge of orbit. Teeth incisor-like in front of jaws, the edges rounded; Growing more conical and smaller posterioly; Not crowded, the spaces between them quite evident. Gill rakers on anterior arch: 7 + 16, long and slender. Suborbital narrow, the edge smooth; Edge of preopercle naked and very finely denticulated. Snout naked between nostrils and lip; Head and body otherwise completely scaled; Bases of dorsal and anal scaled, the spinous dorsal with three rows of attenuated scales extending upward between the spines. Lateral line ending below origin of soft dorsal; A few pores along median part of caudal peduncle. Soft dorsal reaching base of caudal when depressed; Neither dorsal nor anal filamentous. Caudal deeply cleft, the lobes somewhat filamentous in a few examples. Max. length: 6.0 cm SL. Depth range: 5 - 25 m.
Color
Brown coloration of sides not confined to area above tubed lateral-line and upper edge of caudal peduncle; Color generally brown above and below lateralline, gradually fading to tan on central portion of body. Overall light brown to blue grey, ventral white, pectoral-fin base spot black, caudal peduncle saddle black continuous with upper lobe margin of caudal fin, caudal fin margin also black on posterior lobe.
Etymology
Pomachromis: from Greek, poma, -atos = cover, operculum + from Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch. Combination of Pomacentrus and Chromis, referring to how this genus demonstrates a “blend of characters” from both.
richardsoni: in honor of United States ichthyologist Robert Earl Richardson (1877-1935).
Original description: Abudefduf richardsoni Snyder, 1909 - Type locality: Naha, Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan.
Distribution
Biology
A common species found in coral and rocky reefs areas exposed to ocean swells. Adults form loose groups near the bottom. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. Males guard and aerate the eggs. Diurnal species.
