Description
Dorsal spines (total): 12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-17; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 11-13; Body depth: 1.9-2.1 in SL; Lateral-line scales: 28. Scales of head and body finely ctenoid, few cycloid may be present on ventral of head and on snout. Max length: 11.0 cm TL. Depth range: 1 - 10 m, usually: 1 - 3 m.
Color
A pale bluish-grey to dark grey damselfish with dusky-grey scale margins forming narrow vertical bands, rear of body, rear of dorsal fin, tail base and caudal fin are bright yellow, pectoral fin slightly yellow; Anterior part of dorsal fin with a dark patch and a narrow blue margin; A small black spot present of upper part of pectoral-fin base; Head with bluish to lavendar markings below the eye.

Plectroglyphidodon: from Greek, plektron = anything to strike with, spur + from Greek, glyphis = carved + from Greek, odous = teeth.
insularis: from Latin, īnsula = island + fom Latin suffix, -āris = used to form an adjective, usually from a noun, indicating a relationship or a pertaining to.
Original description: Stegastes insularis Allen & Emery, 1985 - Type locality: off Ethel Beach, Christmas Island, eastern Indian Ocean, depth 3-6 meters.

Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Christmas Island (Indian Ocean); Marcus Island (northwestern Pacific), Japan and Taiwan south to New Caledonia.
