Description
Dorsal spines (total): 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 11-12; Pectoral fin rays: 16-17; Lateral line scale: 16-17. Max. length: 8.0 cm TL. Depth range: 1 - 10 m.
Color
Body light bluish-gray; Snout and rear of dorsal, anal and tail fin, yellow. Black spot at upper edge of operuclum.
Etymology
Neopomacentrus: from Greek, neos = new + from Greek, poma = cover, operculum + from Greek, kentron = sting.
nemurus: from Greek, nema, -atos = thread, filament + from Greek, oura = tail. Referring to its “more or less thread-like” caudal-fin lobes.
Original description: Glyphisodon nemurus Bleeker, 1857 - Type localities: Kajeli, Buru Island, Molucca Islands; Ambon Island, Molucca Islands, Indonesia.
Distribution
Western Pacific: Indonesia east to Palau and New Ireland (Papua New Guinea), south to Solomon Islands and New Caledonia.
Biology
Adults inhabit lagoon and inshore coral reefs, usually in areas where silting is prevalent. Aggregates over coral outcrops to feed on zooplankton. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. Males guard and aerate the eggs. Diurnal species.
