Description
Dorsal spines (total): 5; Dorsal soft rays (total): 21; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 16 - 17. Recognized by the double lines of dashes over the back. Lower two-thirds of body whitish with 8 narrow red bars, each containing 2 dark spots (black or darker red), one at of bar and one at level of lower third of body. A small dark red to black spot on abdomen above base of pelvic fins. Spinous portion of dorsal fin cream with a broad oblique black bar (except posteriorly). Scales on opercle cycloid. Dorsal with anterior large black blotch. Below Pectoral base is a red spot w/wo black centre. Tail clear with white specks near base. Max length : 15.0 cm. Depth range: 4 - 40 m.
Etymology
Parapercis: from Greek prefix, para = resembling to + from Greek, perke = perch. Perch is a common name for fish of the genus Perca, freshwater gamefish belonging to the family Percidae.
Distribution
Western Pacific : southern Japan to the Great Barrier Reef, east to Pitcairn, west to Western Australia. Reported from New Caledonia.
Biology
Mainly occurs at moderate depth on open rubble reef flats, but occasionally more shallow on outer reef habitats. Usually on rubble or sand near coral reefs solitary or forms small groups.
