Description
Dorsal spines (total): 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10, the first to fourth spines increasing in length, the remaining spines about equal; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8-10 (usually: 9); Pectoral fin rays: 15 (including small splint-like uppermost element); Greatest body depth: 2.3-2.8 in Standard Length; Lateral-line scales: 68-74; Rows of scales on cheek: 4-6; Body oblong; Dorsal profile of head moderately sloped; Eye relatively large, its diameter about equal to length of snout. Jaw teeth in a narrow villiform band bordered by an outer series of conical teeth; Four moderate-sized canines at front of upper jaw and 6 at front of lower jaw; Maxilla (upper jaw) with a longitudinal denticulated ridge; A pair of close-set, round nasal openings on each side of snout in front of eyes; Caudal fin strongly forked with pointed tips. Five scale rows between lateral line and base of middle dorsal-fin spines; Inner surface of pectoral-fin axil scaleless. Max. length: 30.0 cm TL, common length: 20.0 cm TL. Depth range: 3 - 30 m.
Color
Upper one-third of side (i.e. back region) dark brown with narrow silvery stripes, corresponding with each horizontal scale row; Remainder of head and body mainly silver to grey except 4 or 5 brownish orange stripes on lower two-thirds of side, uppermost stripe is the widest and originates at upper corner of gill flap (operculum); A prominent golden yellow to orange blotch directly below posterior part of dorsal fin and just in front of caudal-fin base; Snout and lips often with a yellowish tinge; Iris golden; A broad pearly stripe on preorbital region, continuing below eye to its posterior margin; Fins mainly clear, although dorsal, anal, and caudal fins sometimes light reddish; Yellow-orange spot at upper base of pectoral fins.

Gnathodentex: from Greek, gnathos = jaw + from Latin, dens, dentis = teeth. Referring to villiform teeth on upper jaw (present on lower jaw also).
aureolineatus: from Latin, aureus = golden, gold + from Latin, lineatus = line. Referring to 4-5 brownish-orange stripes on lower sides.

Indo-West Pacific: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Seychelles, Comoros, Mozambique Channel, Madagascar and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues) east to Marshall Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to Kagoshima Prefecture (southern Japan), south to (Western Australia), eastern Australia, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island (Australia), Tonga and Rapa (French Polynesia).
