Description
Épines dorsales (Total) : 7; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 10-11; Épines anales : 1; Rayons mous anaux : 9-11; Vertèbres : 26. Taille maximum : 13.0 cm TL. Profondeur : 1 - 25 m, habituellement 1 - 18 m.
Couleur
Corps de couleur variable généralement pâle avec des taches noires à brun foncé et bleu clair formant des bandes longitudinales. Ses nageoires dorsales et caudale ont des petits points brun foncé alignés.
Étymologie
Istigobius : du Grec, istios = queue + du Latin, gobius = poisson de l'espèce des goujons.
decoratus : du Latin, decoro = décorer, orner, parer, embellir, garnir d'ornements.

Mer Rouge, Pacifique Indo-Ouest : Est de l'Afrique, golfe Persique, Socotra, Seychelles, Madagascar et Mascareignes, à l'Est, Rotuma et Tonga, au Nord, préfecture de Kagoshima (Sud du Japon), au Sud, Australie, île de Lord Howe et Nouvelle-Calédonie.
Biologie
Généralement, l'espèce est observée sur une zone sablo-vaseuse immobile dans son environnement. C'est une espèce solitaire.

Description
Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9 - 11; Vertebrae: 26. Segmented and non branching caudal rays: 3 (rarely: 2), branching: 14 (rarely: 15). Predorsal cycloid scales: 7-10, trunk ctenoid. Isthmus narrow, scaled forward to vertical at posterior part of preoperculum. Sexual dimorphism exhibited in anal, pelvic and second dorsal fin. Max. length: 13.0 cm. Depth range: 1 - 25 m, usually: 1 - 18 m.
Color
Color highly variable, brownish on upper half, grading to white below; dark brown scale margins forming honeycomb pattern and midlateral row of double dark brown spots forming rectangular markings. Few with no black spots on nape. Two diagonal, dusky lines on operculum; An inverted U-shaped spot prominent at the distal end of upper jaw. Pectoral fin with small dusky spots; Two longitudinal lines on pectoral base spreading onto it fin rays.

Distribution
Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, Persian Gulf, Socotra, Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Rotuma and Tonga, north to Kagoshima Prefecture (southern Japan), south to New Caledonia and Australia, and Lord Howe Island.
Biology
A common species that inhabits areas of coralline sand of clear lagoon and seaward reefs. Found singly. Genital papilla of male sometimes darkly pigmented and reaching to side of anal spine. Female genital papilla truncate, ending well before origin of anal fin.
Similar species
Fishes in the genera Bathygobius can be easily confused with those of Istigobius. The main difference is the overhanging snout in Istigobius. Bathygobius has larger elongate dark spots on the midside and numerous small white spots (Istigobius has white lines, but no spots). Istigobius tends to have brighter colors, with Bathygobius being black, brown and white.
