Description
Dorsal spines (total): 6-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal spine: 1; Anal soft rays: 11; All dorsal and anal soft rays branched, the last to base; Pectoral fin rays: 18-19 (usually: 18), the uppermost and lower 1-2 unbranched; Pelvic fin rays: I, 5, branched, united as a disk, with a well-developed frenum; Segmented caudal rays: 17, the middle: 13-14 (usually: 13) branched; Upper and lower procurrent caudal rays: 6-7 (usually: 7); Lateral line scales: 46-52 (usually: 47); Transverse scale rows about: 17; No scales on head, nape, pectoral fin base, or chest; Scales progressively larger posteriorly; Scales cycloid anteriorly on body, becoming ctenoid posterior to base of 4th or 5th dorsal spine; No scales on fins except basally on caudal fin; Gill rakers: 4-5 (usually: 5) + 10-12 (usually: 11); Body depth: 4.3-5.0 in SL; Gill opening extending forward to a vertical slightly anterior to hind edge of preopercle; Second dorsal spine of adults elongate; caudal fin shorter than head; Body depth: 4.3-5.0 (usually: 4.35) in SL; Mouth oblique, forming an angle of about 25° to horizontal axis of head and body, with lower jaw slightly projecting; Maxilla reaching or slightly posterior to a vertical through center of eye, upperjaw length: 2.35-2.6 (usually: 2.6) in head length. Max. length: 5.3 cm SL. Depth range: 9 - 21 m.
Color
Body with 4 longitudinal rows of dark brown spots, those of 3rd (midlateral) row largest and horizontally elongate, except for last 1-2; Large anterior dark spots of midlateral row often encircled by blue dots; One row of 3 dark spots on cheek, often joined by a light-brown band, first spot above posterior end of maxilla, second obliquely dorsoposterior on preopercle, and third at same level on opercle; An oblique blue and yellow mark behind lower edge of eye, followed by a similar smaller mark on preopercle and 1 on opercle, these marks often associated with a small dusky to brown spot; A curved blue and yellow line or series of dashes from behind upper part of eye to below origin of first dorsal fin; An elliptical bright white spot on lower 1/3 of pectoral fins.
Etymology
Ctenogobiops: from Greek, kteis, ktenos = comb + from Latin, gobius = gudgeon + from Ancient Greek, óps = eye, face, appearance. Referring to the closely related and presumably similar to Ctenogobius genus.
mitodes: from Greek, mitodes = theadlike. Referring to filamentous second dorsal fin of adults.
Original description: Ctenogobiops mitodes Randall, Shao & Chen, 2007 - Type locality: Pratas Reef, 3 kilometers north of Pratas Island, South China Sea, depth 10 meters.
Distribution
Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: Indonesia, east to Marshall Islands and New Ireland (Papua New Guinea), north to Philippines, south to Kimberley (Western Australia) and New Caledonia.
Biology
Inhabits sandy and rubble bottoms in lagoons and sheltered coastal reefs.
Similar species
Ctenogobiops feroculus (Lubbock & Polunin, 1977) - Reported from New Caledonia.
Ctenogobiops pomastictus (Lubbock & Polunin, 1977) - Reported from New Caledonia. Ctenogobiops mitodes differs from the similar Ctenogobiops pomastictus in having an elongate second dorsal-fin spine as an adult, 46-52 scales in a longitudinal series on the body (vs 55-59 in Ctenogobiops pomastictus), and one versus two rows of dark spots on the cheek.
