Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 11; Longitudinal scale series: 48-56; Opening of gill extending slightly anterior to vertical at posterior edge of preopercle; Greatest depth of body: 4.7-5.5 in SL; Longer caudal fin compared to head length; Fifth and sixth branched caudal rays slightly prolonged as filaments. Max. length: 8.0 cm TL. Depth range: 2 - 20 m.

Color
Pale grey body color; Large dark brown spots and scattered smaller spots on body; Belly and ventral body above anal fin with vertical orange lines; Oblique orange bands on head; Base of upper pectoral fin with small white spot, larger spot on basal part of fin.

Etymology
Ctenogobiops: from Greek, kteis, ktenos = comb + from Latin, gobius = gudgeon + from Ancient Greek, óps = eye, face, appearance. Referring to the closely related and presumably similar to Ctenogobius genus.
aurocingulus: from Latin, aurum = gold, overlay with gold, gild + from Latin, cingulus or cingulum = girdle, encircle, surround.
Original description: Aparrius aurocingulus Herre, 1935 - Type locality: Ovalau Island, Fiji Islands.
Distribution
Indo-West Pacific: Sri Lanka east to Micronesia and Samoa, north to Taiwan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia.
Biology
Found on sandy lagoon bottoms. Inhabits coastal sand slopes in rubble patches on reef crests, usually on dark substrates.
