Corps brun foncé avec des points bleus sur les joues, les flancs et le ventre.

Lagon : zone litorales avec cailloux et coraux épars.

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11 (usually: 10); Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 8-9 (usually: 9); Pectoral fin rays: 16-17; Depth of body: 3.0-3.6 in SL; longitudinal scale series: 23-25; Predorsal scales: 7-8. Body relatively short, compressed. Head compressed; 2-10 spinous projections at posterior margin of preopercle; Gill opening not extending anteriorly to a vertical through posterior margin of preopercle; Tongue rounded or near truncate. Third spine of first dorsal fin elongate and filamentous; Pelvic fins almost separated; Frenum absent. Scales on body ctenoid, exclusive of pectoral-fin base and breast with cycloid scales; Anterior part of cheek and branchiostegal membrane with cycloid scales, whereas posterior part of cheek and operculum with ctenoid scales. Sensory canals and pores present on head; Distinct transverse pattern of sensory-papillae rows on cheek; A pair of short longitudinal rows of sensory papillae just behind chin. Prolonged third dorsal spine, forms long filament in adult; Ctenoid scales; Head scaled except snout and interorbital space; Rounded caudal fin; Max. length: 6.5 cm TL. Depth range: 1 - 20 m.

Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, South Africa, Persian Gulf, Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll, Hawaiian Islands and Tuamotu Archipelago, north to central Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia and Rapa.
Biology
Found on algal-coated reef rock and rubble of inner flats and turbid lagoons. Takes refuge in burrows or holes in the reef. Feeds on small benthic invertebrates. Benthic spawner. Solitary or in small group.
