Description
Dorsal spines (total): 6-7and fin triangular, with 1st or 2nd spine longest; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-10; Anal spine: 1; Anal soft rays: 8-9; Pectoral fins rays: 15-19; Longitudinal scale series: 22-26; Ctenoid body scales and on nape; Predorsal scales: 8-11; Cheek and opercle without scales; Body depth: 5.5-6.1 in SL. Body moderately elongate and compressed. Head subcylindrical or somewhat compressed; Eyes large, dorsolateral. Lower jaw slightly projecting beyond upper jaw; Gill opening broad, extending anteriorly to below eye. Pelvic fins fused medially; Frenum present. Scales on body ctenoid; Predorsal area, cheek and dorsal part of operculum with large cycloid scales. Sensory canals and pores present on head; Numerous transverse rows of sensory papillae on cheek; Snout pointed; Mouth terminal, chin tip anteriormost, and rear of jaws end below front half of eyes. Teeth small, mostly evenly sized in both jaws, with no large canine tooth at sides or front. Pelvic fins united and frenum present; Caudal fin short and rounded, about equal to head length. Max. length: 10.2 cm SL. Depth range: 3 - 25 m, usually: 10 - 15 m.
Color
Head and body yellowish, with 4 elongate brown blotches along lateral midline, and dense dark brown to black oval spot oriented longitudinally across bases of central caudal-fin rays; Dorsal portion of eye blackish, giving eyes hooded look.
Etymology
Arcygobius: from Greek, arcy = net + from Latin, gobius = gudgeon. Referring to net-like pattern of body.
baliurus: from the type Locality, Bali + from Malay, urus = gouvernance, governement. The fish was named by Mr Heinrich Kuhl and Mr Johan Coenraad van Hasselt.
Original description: Gobius baliurus Valenciennes, 1837 - Type locality: no locality stated but probalby Bali, Java, Indonesia.
Distribution
Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: East Africa (Mozambique, Kenya), Seychelles; Malaysia and Indonesia east to Philippines, north to Ryukyu Islands (Japan), south to New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and New Caledonia.
Biology
Solitary or in small groups. Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms.
