Description
Dorsal spines (total): 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11 (usually: 11); Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 11; Pectoral fin rays: 13-14 (usually: 14); Lateral line scales: 47-49; Gill rakers: 9-11 + 23-26; Preorbital serrae: 14-21; Body depth: 2.55-2.85 in SL; Orbit diameter: 2.55-2.8 in head length; Maxilla usually reaching to below anterior margin of pupil; Caudal fin forked, the caudal concavity: 2.5-3.0 in head length. Max. length : 13.4 cm SL. Depth range: 0 - 10 m.
Color
Silvery, the front of lips and upper half of snout blackish; Caudal fin yellow with a very broad black posterior margin, the upper and lower margins narrowly black, but broadening toward base, often connecting across base of fin.
Etymology
Kuhlia: in honnor of the German naturalist and zoologist Heinrich Kuhl, 1797-1821. He collected and provided a manuscript description of type species, Kuhlia ciliata (=rupestris).
munda: from Latin, mundus = neat, elegant, sophisticated. Allusion not explained nor evident.
Original description: Herops munda De Vis, 1884 - Type locality: Cardwell, Queensland, Australia.
Distribution
Western Pacific: Australia from Cape York to Cardwell, Queensland, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji, north to southern Japan (including Ogasawara Island).
Biology
Found inshore. Also in brackish waters and ascends to middle reaches of rivers. Feeds on small fishes, crustaceans and insects.
