Description
Dorsal spines (total): 16-17; Dorsal soft rays (total): 32-35; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 8-9 (usually: 8); Pectoral fin rays: 14, the lower 6 unbranched and thickened, 3 of which project well posterior to branched rays; Lateral line scales: 58-65; Gill rakers: 7-8 + 14-16; Body depth: 2.6-2.85 in SL; Head small: 3.3-3.7 in SL; Nape higly arched; First three dorsal spines short, the fourth much the longest, about equal to head length; Caudal fin forked. Max. length: 35.0 cm TL. Depth range: 2 - 55 m.
Color
Broad dark stripe running from the anterior dorsal fin spines to the lower lobe of the caudal fin, a dark band from just before the dorsal fin to the abdomen, a dark bar from the nape to the pectoral-fin base and dark bars from above the eyes to the gill cover.
Etymology
Goniistius: from Greek, -gon = angled + from Greek, istion = sail. Referring to the oblique bars found on many species.
vestitus: from Latin = clothed, clad, dressed, having been clothed. Referring to broad dark stripe running from anterior dorsal-fin spines to lower lobe of caudal fin, and three diagonal dark bands on body in front of dorsal fin.
Original description: Zeodrius vestitus Castelnau, 1879 - Type locality: Sydney market, New South Wales, Australia.
Distribution
Southwestern Pacific: Capricorn Group, southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to Bermagui, New South Wales, also Middleton Reef and Elizabeth Reef, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea and New Caledonia.
Biology
Occurs in inshore and offshore rocky and coral reefs. Nocturnal, feedin on a wide variety of small invertebrates, especially crustaceans.
