Distribution
Indo-West Pacific: Comoro Island, Madagascar, Seychelles, east coast of India (Andaman Sea) and Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.
Biology
Inhabits shallow coastal waters. Bbroadly distributed throughout mangrove estuaries to the open coast. Occurs in schools along calm shorelines. Important as forage food species to larger commercial fish and as bait fish.

Description
Dorsal spines (total): 5 - 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 11 - 14. The distal end of upper jaw extending slightly backward beyond vertical through anterior border of orbit. The anus is 2 to 4 scales in front of the pelvic fin tips, rarely more than 3 scales. Max length : 11.0 cm. Depth: 0–4 m.

Doboatherina: from local name, dobo, name of atherinid fishes in Mie Prefecture, Japan + from Greek Atherina, the name for the eperlane, type genus of family.
