Description
Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-10; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 9; Vertebrae: 24; Developed gill rakers: 6 + 16-18; Longitudinal scales series: 23-25, Slender body, greatest depth of body: 3.8-4.5 in SL. Interorbital space flat. Small teeth externally on side of jaw. Longest second dorsal and anal fin rays: 1.5-1.65 in Head. Caudal shape rhomboidal. Base of caudal fin long. Max. length: 21.0 cm TL. Depth range: 10 - 35 m.
Color
Interspaces between dark bars on body faintly reddish; Soft rays of median fins reddish. Anterior nostril with very short darkly pigmented posterior flap
Etymology
Pseudamia: from Greek, pseudes = false + from Greek, amia, -as = a kind of bonito. Name given by Aristotle to a fish (Later name applied to Apogon by Gronow (1763), now a commonly used suffix in the family).
zonata: from Latin, zōnātus = belted, girdled, zoned. Referring to alternating broad dark and light bars on body.
Original description: Pseudamia zonata Randall, Lachner & Fraser, 1985 - Type locality: cave off Tambuli Beach Hotel, east side of Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines, depth 30.5 meters.
Distribution
Western Pacific: Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, east to Fiji, north to Ryukyu Islands (Japan), Australia (Holmes Reef in the Coral Sea), New Caledonia (Puebo - North East) and Ouvea (Loyalty Islands).

Biology
Found in deep caves, usually where little light is left. Solitary or in small group.
