Actinopterygii (Gigaclass) > Actinopteri (Class) > Teleostei (Subclass) > Gobiiformes (Order) > Apogonoidei (Suborder) > Apogonidae (Family) > Apogoninae (Subfamily) > Ostorhinchus (Genus)
Apogon à point rouge, Poisson cardinal à point rouge, Redspot cardinalfish, Rubyspot cardinalfish, Akahoshikinsen ishimochi, アカホシキンセンイシモチ,
Synonyme
Apogon rubrimacula (Randall & Kulbicki, 1998)

Apogon rubrimacula (Randall & Kulbicki, 1998)
Although the species is still valid on "Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes", Kuiter & Kozawa, 2019 believe that Ostorhinchus rubrimacula would be a synonym of Ostorhinchus cyanosoma based on a description made at night. The red dot at the base of the caudal fin would be present only at night.

Description
Dorsal spines (total): 8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 24; Predorsal scales: 4; Preopercular edge serrate; Preopercular ridge smooth to slightly crenulate; Body depth: 2.85-3.05 in SL. Max. reported age: 4 years. Max. length: 4.5 cm SL. Depth range: 0 - 33 m.
Color
Silvery blue-gray with 6 orange to orange-yellow stripes on head and body, those on body narrower than blue-gray interspaces; Third orange-yellow stripe from dorsal edge of eye ending below space between dorsal fins; Midlateral orange-yellow stripe ending in a red spot at base of caudal fin.
Etymology
Ostorhinchus: from Greek, osteon = bone + from Greek, rhynchos = beak. In reference to the bony jaws, very much advanced and jagged, which take the place of the teeth.
rubrimacula: from Latin, ruber or rubrus = red + from Latin, macula = spot. In reference to the conspicuous red spot at the midbase of the caudal fin.
Original description: Apogon rubrimacula Randall & Kulbicki, 1998 - Type locality: 7 miles west of Honiara, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, western Pacific, depth 33 meters.
Distribution
Western Pacific: Indonesia, east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu Islands and Osumi Islands (southern Japan), south to Queensland (Australia) and New Caledonia.
Biology
Inhabit coral reef. Form small aggregations. Mouthbrooders. Distinct pairing during courtship and spawning.
Similar species
Ostorhinchus cyanosoma (Bleeker, 1853) - Reported from New Caledonia - Link to the species (here).
Ostorhinchus properuptus (Whitley, 1964) - Reported from New Caledonia - Link to the species (here). Differs from other species in the disposition of the color bands, notably in that the lateral ones converge on the base of the caudal fin, without a median stripe between them, there is a V-shaped mark on top of the head whose prongs point backwards and each of which divides into a further V-shaped mark and there is a dark stripe below the eye to edge of opercle.
