Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 8; Pectoral fin rays: 14-15; Pelvic fin rays: I, 5; Principal caudal rays: 9 + 8; Pored lateralline scales: 24-25; Transverse scale rows above lateral line: 2; Transverse scale rows below lateral line: 5-6; Median predorsal scales: 5-6; Circumpeduncular scale rows: 12 (5 + 2 + 5); Vertebrae: 10 + 14; Body depth: 3.1-3.4 in SL; Head long: 2.7-2.8 in SL; Eye diameter: 2.7-2.9 in head; Gill rakers: 6-7 + 18-19; Villiform teeth in a wide band on premaxilla and on dentary; Two rows on the palatine and vomer; None on ectopterygoid, entopterygoid or basihyal. Max. length: 8.0 cm TL. Depth range: 0 - 50 m, usually: 8 - 40 m.
Color
Two dark stripes, a broad one from snout through eye to end of caudal fin, a narrow one from above eye to or past base of second dorsal fin; No dark stripes in second dorsal or anal fins. Blackish stomach and intestine, peritoneum silvery with many melanophores.
Etymology
Ostorhinchus: from Greek, osteon = bone + from Greek, rhynchos = beak. In reference to the bony jaws, very much advanced and jagged, which take the place of the teeth.
kiensis: from the type locality, Kii Province (now Wakayama Prefecture), Japan, “one of the richest collecting grounds for fishes yet known in any part of the world" + from Latin suffix, -ensis = denoting place.

Distribution
Indo-West Pacific: Indonesia east to Philippines and New Ireland (Papua New Guinea), north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia.
Biology
Inhabits rocky and coral reefs. Also above sandy and muddy bottoms of bays and inlets. Solitary or in small groups. Mouthbrooders. Distinct pairing during courtship and spawning.
